How to get your pets to take Tablets/Medication
Author: The Vet Shed Date Posted:18 November 2019
Some pets love taking their medication - they just gobble it straight up! Those are the easy ones.. Us pet parents know that, that is not the case for many pets. Lots of pets refuse to consume their medication - and it can be even harder when there are a few you have to give them at a time! We are here to help. Here are some simple tips to help you make sure your pet has their treatment/medication so they can be protected and feel good!
1. Hide it in their food
This tip is very simple! You can crush up the tablet or chew in your pets wet food and if they love their food alot they shouldn't even be able to taste it. Lots of pets have to have their medication this way and it not actually that hard to do!
2. Hide it in a treat
If you can find a yummy treat that you can wrap around a the tablet this can be another alternative. However with this option there can be the chance that your pet eats the treat and somehow spits out the tablet (we have all been there).
3. The one two three game
Start off by giving your pet one treat, then another then disguise the tablet in somthing yummy and give it to them on the third time round. Try teasing your pet a bit and increase anticipation for wanting the treat therfore when they finally get it in their mouth they are likely to gobble it all up! Then follow it up with another yummy treat that has no tablet in it.
4. Physically give the pill
If your dog still wont go near the tablet you will have to physically give them the tablet. Make sure you stay relaxed otherwise the pet will clench his/her jaw and it will make it alot harder for you! Open up your pets mouth and drop it as far back on the tongue as you can. Quickly close the dogs mouth and then they will swallow!
4. Pet Piller
You can also use a product called the pet piller! This may be the solution that suits you best. Pet Pillers make administering tablets easy. No longer the need to put your fingers into biting mouths. Pet piller holds the tablet firmly with an easy release when tablet is to be administered.
