Skin and coat care for your pet

We all know the feeling: walking out from the spa or hairdresser's, we feel relaxed, rejuventated, and happy. It goes without saying, then, that our dogs and cats, covered head-to-toe in hair, feel exactly the same way. It's vital to keep our cats' and dogs' pelts in great shape, for their physical and emotional wellbeing. But how best to go about it?

The Vet Shed has been making pets and their owners smile since 2003. Our philosophy? Excellent care and expert guidance, coupled with unparalleled customer service. Comprised of an all-star team of professional vets and vet nurses, we receive rave reviews from our valued clients for our personalised advice.

Recently we were asked to contribute our advice on how pet owners can ensure their fur babies have an extra shiny, extra smooth coat? The article by Advantage Pet Care, ‘Keeping Your Pet's Coat Healthy and Shiny’ offers plenty of great advice on the topic and here we go into our suggestion in a bit more detail.

When it comes to washing our pets it is important to remember that they do not have the same PH level in their skin as we do. Washing them with your shampoo might make them smell nice, but it is not doing the best for them. You may be stripping their skin of essential oils and you may even be washing off your spot on flea treatments. Reputable companies make PH balanced shampoos for dogs and cats that are good for their skin and coat and also will not interfere with any spot on treatments you may be using. There are many shampoos on the market including some very good medical shampoos that will treat fungal and bacterial skin conditions.

The Vet Shed has a huge range of shampoos and The Vet Shed team can advise you on the best product for your dog or cat.

When talking about your pet’s coat health there are a few things that have to be considered. Your pet can not have healthy skin or a nice coat if they have fleas, mites or lice. These parasites will cause itching, redness, sores, hair loss and a very unhappy cat or dog. Parasites are the number 1 cause of skin problems. The easiest way to solve your problem is with Advocate. Advocate is a monthly spot on treatment. A few drops on the back of the neck each month and your cat or dog will not only be protected from these parasites but they will also be protected from Heartworm and intestinal worms.
