Retractable Dog Leads - are they worth it?

Author: Alicia

Retractable dog leads, also known as retractable leashes or flexi-leashes, are a popular option for dog owners who wish to allow their pets greater flexibility while walking their dogs. The leash has a reel mechanism that allows it to stretch and retract as the dog moves.

Advantages:

  • Variable Length: Retractable leads allow you to vary the length of the leash, allowing you to give your dog more freedom to explore while yet keeping them near when needed.
  • Control: Being able to lock and unlock the leash offers for rapid control in circumstances when you need to keep your dog close, such as in crowded locations or near traffic.
  • Exploration: Dogs generally like the extra freedom to explore their surroundings, which a retractable lead may allow while still keeping some amount of control.
  • Retractable leashes can be excellent for training commands like "come" or "stay" since they give your dog greater room to manoeuvre.

Disadvantages:

  • Concerns about safety: Retractable leads can be dangerous. Because of the length, your dog may be able to travel too far away, thus placing them in danger.
  • Tangles & knots: The tiny rope or tape of retractable leads can quickly tangle, causing you and your dog frustration. Tangles can also impair the efficacy of the braking system.
  • Lack of Control: A retractable lead may provide less control in some situations, particularly if your dog is powerful or pulls. If the dog suddenly lunges, the handle will be yanked from your grip.
  • Retractable leashes may not be suitable for all dogs, particularly those who pull excessively or have a high prey drive. The abrupt lengthening of the leash might be challenging to control.

  •

Retractable leads may not be as durable as regular leashes, especially if they are subjected to harsh handling or if the dog chews on the leash.

If you want to utilise a retractable lead, you must do it with care. Be mindful of your surroundings, utilise the locking mechanism as necessary, and select a length suited for the situation. Consider your dog's behaviour and whether a retractable lead is the best option depending on their temperament and training requirements. Always follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.
