Welcoming your new fish

Adding new fish to your tank is an exciting time but don’t rush this step! Here are a few tips to give your new fish the best possible start in your tank –

1. If your tank is new ensure it is fully cycled - test your water to make sure the parameters are safe for your fish.

2. If your tank is already home to fish and you are adding more – feed your existing fish before adding the new ones. This will make for a safer welcome!

3. Turn off the lights in your aquarium and the room it is situated in to minimise scary contrasts in the tank and prevent stress.

4. Float the bag containing your new fish in your aquarium for 15 to 20 minutes. So that the water in the bag to reaches the same temperature as that of the tank. This avoids shocking your new fish if there are temperature differences.

5. Open up the bag and start adding small amounts of your tank water (1/2 cup etc) to the bag every 5 minutes or so (and reseal the bag in between).

6. After 30 minutes of doing this your fish will be ready for their new tanks. Using a net gently scoop them out of the bag and add them to the tank. Avoid adding the water from the bag to the tank to prevent contamination.
