What to feed your pet bird
Date Posted:29 January 2020
Just like many other pets foods there are so many varieties when it comes to feeding your birds. If you aren't sure on the best feeding solution for your bird take a read!
Many people jump straight into seed diets as they are relatively cheap and it is just what most people think of first when feeding a bird. However, seed diets are pretty much like Mcdonalds to birds. They lack essential nutrients and vitamins that birds kept as pets need to stay healthy and happy. You wouldn't feed yourself Mcdonalds everyday so you shouldn't be doing the same to your bird. If your bird is currently on a seed diet it is a great idea to swap them over by mixing more and more of the pelleted diet each time you feed them. You must slowly introduce the new food to them.
Pellet Diets
There is a huge variety of pellet diets that have been specially formulated for different types of birds and their needs. Different birds will need different diets so here is a guide on what you should be feeding your specific breed of bird.
- Lorikeets - Lorikeets are natural nectar feeders in the wild. The Lori Dry and Wet feeds mimic the nectar that they would get from being in the wild so it is essential that you feed at least one of these. Along with the Lori food you will need to feed fresh fruit such as apples, pears, strawberries, grapes, melon, peaches and cherries.
- Nut Eaters - Bird breeds that eat nuts such as Macaws should have a pelleted diet as well as fresh unflavoured nuts.
- Fruit Eaters - Birds such as Conures, Indian Ring Necks and Eclectus Parrots require a diet of formulated pellets with fruit supplements.
- Seed Eaters - Birds such as cockatiels, Galahs and Cockatoos are traditionally known as seed eaters - as we know seed isn't the best for birds so we recommend mixing 40% seed to a 60% pelleted diet, fruit and vegetables.
Overall, your bird will require a diet with lots of variety as well as always having fresh water available. Feed should be given in a clean area where spillage does not occur. We have a range of bowls and feeders that birds love.
