Why do cats purr?

Date Posted:1 August 2019

When your cat purrs it can be one of the most loving and relaxing feelings you can experience. There is nothing better than a warm cat snuggled next to you purring. But do you know why and when cats really purr?

Cats purr in a variety of different situations. Think about it like this - it is the same as human laughter. Some things that you laugh at others may not. It is the same with cats, different stimuli make differernt cats purr. Some of the most common times cats purr are when:

  • As a Kitten - Purring is a way that kittens let their mother know that they are ok. It also serves as a bonding purpose for the mother and the kitten.
  • Being Content - This one is probably the most common. When your cat is sitting in their favourite spot, relaxed and is feeling happy they can purr.
  • Asking for somthing - Your cat can purr if they want somthing such as food. When wanting somthing they usually will be vocal and may walk inbetween your legs along with the purring.
  • Being Anxious - Some cats actually do purr when they are scared - this has been seen in a number of vet hospitals.

Now onto how they purr. Purring in cats happens during the complete respiratory cycle, which is both inhaling and exhaling. Purring involves the rapid movement of the muscles in the larynx, which is the voice box combined with movements in the diaphram. Cats of many species can pur at between 25 and 150 Hz!

Overall, if your cat is purring - it is usually a very good thing. This shows that your cat is content and happy with you and his/her whereabouts. However if your cat does not seem relaxed while purring make sure to keep an eye on him/her as it may be more of an anxious purr.
