Draw reins and side reins are training aids that may teach your horse to keep light contact with the bit while flowing freely into the bridle, as well as to carry himself straight and balanced. Draw reins are used for under saddle instruction, whereas side reins are usually utilised for work on the longe and in hand.

Draw reins guide your horse, but you don't want them to rely on them. Riding with draw reins all of the time may encourage your horse to hang or lean on them; when you remove them, he may be less on the bit than before since they were "holding" him there. He may even toss up his head or poke his nose, which is exactly what you were trying to educate him not to do. So keep your draw rein sessions brief: Warm him up with normal reins, then ride him for five to ten minutes with draw reins and ask him to keep good neck and head position with regular reins.
