Peptosyl 200ml - Gastroenteritis & Diarrhoea Relief for Dogs and Horses
Peptosyl is a liquid formula designed to help manage gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in dogs and horses. It works by coating the stomach and intestines to soothe the digestive tract and alleviate symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Registered Name: NV Peptosyl Bismuth Salicylate Oral Suspension
Composition:
- Bismuth Salicylate: 17.5 mg/mL
- Bentonite
Actions:
Peptosyl is an antidiarrhoeal that acts by converting bismuth salicylate into bismuth carbonate and sodium salicylate after oral administration. This formulation helps to coat the mucosal surface, adsorb toxins, and provide protective, antacid, and antiseptic effects. It is mildly astringent and does not cause bacterial resistance. Additionally, it may help alleviate pain from inflammatory bowel conditions.
The active ingredients also inhibit plaque formation of enteric rotavirus and help control acute secretory diarrhoea. Bentonite, a natural clay, has properties similar to activated charcoal, binding bacterial endotoxins to further support gut health.

- Gastroenteritis
- Diarrhoea in dogs and horses
Warnings:
- Safety during pregnancy in animals has not been established.
- Faeces may appear darker, potentially being mistaken for melaena.
Precautions:
- If symptoms persist despite appropriate treatment, further diagnostic evaluation is recommended.
Withholding Periods:
- Meat (Horses): 28 days
- Racing: Follow regulations for performance animals regarding medication.
Dosage and Administration:
- Horses: 0.5 to 1 mL/kg body weight, orally
- Dogs: 0.25 to 0.5 mL/kg body weight, orally
Repeat every 6 hours for up to 36 hours, then reduce to 12-hour intervals for an additional 2-3 days.

Helping an upset tummy
By: Janet Henderson on 14 March 2020I use Peptosyl if my dogs have tummy ache or diarrhea. Their pain appears to quickly subside after being given the recommended dose of Peptosyl. I keep it in the fridge and shake thoroughly before administering.
