Permoxin: Insecticidal Pyrethrin Spray and Rinse
Permoxin is an effective insecticidal spray or rinse formulated to control flies, ticks, and biting insects. It also aids in the management of Queensland Itch.
Composition:
Permethrin (25:75 cis) 40 g/L.
Actions
Permoxin contains a third-generation synthetic pyrethroid, which targets the neuromuscular system of flies and fleas. Unlike natural pyrethrins, pyrethroids like permethrin are more photostable, providing longer-lasting protection. The specific formulation of Permethrin (25:75) is designed to minimize dermal irritation and systemic toxicity, making it one of the safest options among third-generation pyrethroids. Additionally, permethrin has insect repellent properties, helping to treat and prevent insect bite allergies.
Indications
Permoxin is effective against a variety of pests, including:
- Flies: Pyrethroid-sensitive species such as Haematobia irritans exigua and Stomoxys calcitrans on horses.
- Biting Insects: Including Culicoides sp. on horses.
- Fleas: Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis on dogs.
- Flea Allergy Dermatitis: Known as summer eczema in dogs.
- Queensland Itch: Commonly affecting horses.
- Ticks: Including Rhipicephalus sp. and paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) on dogs.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for use on cats or puppies under 12 weeks of age.
- Permoxin is generally diluted with water however it can be diluted with Methylated spirits, see label for this dilution. It is very important to avoid diluting Permoxin with methylated spirits when applying to broken skin as it will sting and irritate.
Precautions
- Prevent contact with the animal’s eyes and mouth.
Directions for Use
For Spray Application:
- Mixing: Combine 10 mL of Permoxin with 400 mL of water (or methylated spirit for quicker drying).
- Application: Spray the entire animal, ensuring complete coverage, and allow the coat to dry.
For Rinse Application:
- Mixing: Dilute 10 mL of Permoxin in 400 mL of water.
- Application: Apply the solution to a wet coat after shampooing and rinsing, or to a dry coat. Use a sponge to help distribute the product; foaming does not affect efficacy.
Treatment Recommendations:
- For insect bite allergies, spray daily until symptoms are under control, then use as needed.
- For flea control, apply at least every seven days.
- For tick control, use as a rinse every seven days. Daily inspections of the animal are essential in areas where paralysis ticks are prevalent.
With regular use and proper application, Permoxin provides effective control of common pests, ensuring the comfort and health of your pets.
Safety Directions
If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre. In Australia, call 131 126.

Highly recommend this product
By: Laura on 27 January 2016I highly recommend permoxin, it is the only product that keeps the ticks and flies away from my ponies. We have just moved into a tick area and we were having trouble with flies as well, I sprayed the ponies and it actually works. I'm extremely happy with it.

We recommend the use of Permoxin on dogs. We we
By: Angela on 30 June 2011We recommend the use of Permoxin on dogs. We were first told of the product when we had a problem with flies biting one of our dogs ears. Whilst reading the label to make up the solution, we read it also covered fleas & ticks, so we've used this ever since to protect against these 3 nasties. It's also a very affordable product, and you just spray it on a few times a week to cover for all 3 problems. I would not though recommend it for owners with cats if they are in contact with the dogs, as it;s main ingredient is Permethrins, which are deadly to cats.
