Grooming your Cat

Grooming your cat or your kitten isn't only to make them look and feel good it is also to make sure they are healthy and feel good on the inside. The benefits of grooming include; preventing hairballs which can become dangerous and cause intestinal blockages, grooming provides you with the opportunity to search for parasites like fleas, ticks, mites and mange, grooming distributes the natural oils of the fur throughout your cat/kittens body and it will enhance the bond you have with your cat! Grooming should always be a pleasant experience for your cat and should cause them no pain, if your cat gets upset you may want to reevaluate what you are doing.
1. Checking your Cat
In order to make sure your cat is feeling its very best the first part of your grooming routine should be to check your cat in these areas:
- Ears - Check the ears for any abnormailities, wax build up, dirt, bleeding, sores, inflammation or mites which leaves a red/brown discharge in the ear.
- Nose - Make sure your cats noise is nice and moist and smooth. A cats nose should not be dry or rough. There should not be any discharge coming from your cats nose.
- Eyes - Your cats eyes should be bright, clear and free of any discharge, redness and swelling.
- Mouth- The gums should be a pink colour and should be free from any sores and swelling. Check the teeth to make sure they are nice and white and there is no plaque build up. Make sure your cat doesnt have bad breath as this can be a sign of dental disease.
- Coat and Skin- Make sure the coat is glossy and strong. Make sure your cat has no skin irritations or sores on his/her body.
- Claws - Check the length of your cats claws in order to determine whether you will need to clip them.
- Bottom - Check your cats bottom is clean and is free from any clumped hair or faeces.
2. Groom the Fur
Cats love to groom themselves, but this can pose dangerous threats when their coat is full of dirt, grease or dead hair. It is our job to make sure their coat is nice and clean so that they can maintain a clean coat without any threat to their health. You can do this by bathing and brushing your cat regularly. We have a whole range of Shampoos for cats as well as brushes and grooming gloves that will make your cat feel like he/she is being rewarded! If your cat doesnt like water thats ok - we have waterless shampoos that will leave them clean and soft.

2. Cut the Nails
Clipping your cats nails is essential, not only to ensure your cats do not wreck your furniture but also so they do not hurt you or other pets while playing and interacting. It is also beneficial to your cat! When they get their nails caught in carpet or other materials it can be painful, and we dont want this. Make sure you only use a clipper designed for cats such as the Gripsoft Cat Nail Clipper. You can wrap your cat in a towel or grab a friend to hold your cat calmly. Clip slowly and carefully, make sure you do not clip too close that you clip the quick, which is the blood vessel inside your cats nail. Make sure you offer your cat some type of scratching pole or post to maintain nail health. Check out our range HERE
